Instagram: A Celebrity-infested New Media Platform, Privacy, Business Tax Dodge & Breathtaking Photography.

Instagram is arguably one of the hottest new media sites out there. From everyday people to celebrities, the social media giant has come to attract over 800 million users globally. So it goes without saying, that from a business perspective, it presents a huge platform for its most famous users. With this open platform comes with huge business opportunities and therein lies the privacy concerns of users' images/photographs. The resulting lack of disclosure of earnings by these users from the site invites Uncle Sam knocking. It's an interesting interplay of a social media site that boasts the best photography anywhere and what has caught the attention of the IRS to rein in those dodging their tax obligations.
This blog will cover a research project under the framework of Social Networking: A Purposeful Loss of Privacy bringing this to light.

  1. Instagram much like any other social media platform can be just another milestone for another platform. As technology continues to evolve the more the word privacy in every sense of the word becomes fluid. The age range for social media runs from early teen to late twenties. Arguably teenagers are more impressionable vs individuals in their twenties; more likely to upload harmful digital information.

    1. Hoque, that problem is an essential part of another of my postings. Teens have so much to loose with Social Media use and that includes putting them out of job markets altogether! It is dangerous what they can unintentionally do to themselves!

  2. So interesting because I am talking of a similar topic. It is amazing actually about how much of the things we post are seen by people that we don't know on an even larger scale than one might realize.

    1. Assata, exactly. And with that many eyes, a simple mistake can turn out to be not so small, with the effect potentially long-lasting.

BLOG: Blog v Wiki

Blogs or wikis is the question. While both are interactive and incorporate "community," amongst users, blogs stem from a more centralized place of creation whereas a wiki is more decentralized. This suggests that Wikis are more susceptible to "wrong information" due to its decentralized nature that allows anyone, educated, experienced or not to have a say in a specified topic. A blog comes from an author who has somewhat a more reliable amount of information on a given topic. The reality is that both are crucial in today's modern-day and age. Wikis are more appropriate in some instances while blogs are advisable over wikis in other circumstances. For example, for a politician running a campaign, a wiki that allows voters to say and voice their opinion can be pretty helpful to tap into helping with the "grassroots" mobilization (as mentioned in the article about grassroots mobilization). The sample politician may prefer a blog in setting the tone for ...

Creativity and New Media

Growing up in a rural area of Africa as a child, putting food on the table was the most important function of the head of the household. And while not poor, my family was surrounded by many have-nots who were mostly subsistence agricultural farmers. These folks grow all the food we eat. And being a farmer is not exactly the most glamorous job there is but everyone depended on these farmers like anywhere else for their source of supply of food. The problem is that these farmers tended to rely on archaic, unreliable and unsustainable means of farming. They couldn’t produce on a mass scale to feed the community. The question then becomes: what if we employ the creativity of new media technologies of virtual worlds to ensure a reliable supply of our food? What would that look like? How does that help solve the problem?      The use of 3D technology in farming maybe the answer. This technology has the potential (like used in construction) to irrigate the land, fertilize...

HW Creativity

In this blog I'll briefly discuss how new media fosters creativity as per a NYT article entitled "I've Been in That Club, Just Not in Real Life" by Dave Itzkoff.      This discusses how a young guy visits a local night club in Manhattan's Lower East Side (LES), unimpressed, he left for home and jumped on a tour of the same night club albeit virtually. The use of virtual worlds allowed him to enjoy what may otherwise only feel real in the real-life LES, VLES. From the general environs, scenes, and experiences, he came to like the virtual world version better than his first attempted stay in the night club.      It goes without saying that the capabilities of this alternate real-world virtual worlds of sorts allows for creative thinking that enables cool inventions. As per this article, MTV stepped up its use of virtual world technologies to compete with other online giants. This suggests it bet that the "fla...
