File sharing is a big part of new media and is pretty widely used amongst users of new media. It adds to the convenience of many who like to “share” files amongst themselves. It is essentially the practice of sharing computer data from one computer to another computer over a network or the Internet.
P2P aka Peer-to-peer file sharing is the process of sharing digital content like electronic books, multimedia (videos, music, etc) through a direct connection between peers. There’s been a crackdown on P2P since people do it to avoid paying for services used leading to huge loss of revenue for content producers. This is akin to the main problem facing the music industry today, for instance.
Some of the best and most common examples of P2P is the sharing of music, music videos, videos, and their use doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon.
As per the NYTimes article titled “As Rights Clash on Youtube, Some Music Vanishes,” it showcases that giant music labels aren’t cutting slacks for any of their copyrighted materials to be used by “unauthorized” users even if those users don’t seem to threaten them. .
With so much money at stake, this will continue to be a hard, long fought battle over what files are accessed or shared between or amongst people.

Back when we had lime wire, that was a big loss for those in the music industry. I feel that today people are using streaming services for a low premium to access all songs vs taking the time to actually illegally download music. YouTube is also considered a part of the streaming industry and now artists are taIking advantage of these services and still are getting paid for it by number of streams. Interesting how the purchasing/listening of music has evolved from physical sales, to digital, and now the streaming era.
